Hot Mic'd: What we'd wear to the Senate, a guy that married his cousin, political roses, & more
This week we’re texting about people fighting about wearing suits, Facetiming about HFC, and celebrating two big political wins — which if you turned on the news this week, would you even know they happened? **Sips coffee and scrolls**
And the political rose goes to… New York passed a massive voting rights package and it’s come in so under the radar. One of the bills-turned-law now allows all NY voters to vote by mail during the early voting period. Hello, increased voter access. I’m really hopeful about how this will impact voter engagement and turnout, especially amongst young people. - SK And the political thorn goes to… the GOP and their government shutdown insanity. The entire situation is maddening – nothing like government funding being held hostage by members of Congress who only care about media attention and clicks. Vom. - SK The most meme-able political moment this week… features the iconic Jen Psaki. - SK Dress code madness aside, an outfit I’d wear to the Senate would include… this dress and these shoes – I’m sureeee open toe is frowned upon, but not going to lose sleep over it because they’re so cute. Also, not for that dress, but I’m obsessed with these shoes in case anyone’s looking for a fun chunky option to go with a set like this, or a long dress + oversized blazer lewk. - SK A guest I’d love to have on the show is… Big Gretch aka Governor Whitmer. Y’all know I want to see her make a run for president soooo - SK A treat that’s getting me through the week are… chocolate creme Newman-O’s and dipping them in peanut butter Parent Trap style. Hot take – I think they taste better than the cookie that inspired their creation, oreos. - SK | And the political rose goes to… Okay climate corps!! I didn’t see this one coming, but I’m so glad it did. Training young people in clean energy and conservation jobs? Like okay pop off economy meets climate. I’m excited to see where it all goes. -MM And the political thorn goes to… is it a thorn if it hurts him politically? Him being Trump… After saying he is responsible for ‘killing Roe’ which is fair, he then went all NVM, “couldn’t be me” on the abortion issue and has gotten into it with anti-abortion groups. Looks like he cares more about his feud with DeSantis than anything else…SHOCKER. -MM The most meme-able political moment this week… Okay, maybe not meme-able necessarily, but this Fetterman versus the dress code wars of 2023 has produced some truly iconic tweets – like this one. The man does not miss. -MM Dress code madness aside, an outfit I’d wear to the Senate would include… Well I already wore a leather jacket to Congress, so let’s set the tone with that. These leather pants + body suit, and a def a blazer of some sort – maybe one like this? And for shoes, I really love a chunky loafer. -MM A guest I’d love to have on the show is… With zero hesitation, it’s AOC. Do I have to explain why this would be so next level? I feel like it’s the kind of answer that just speaks for itself. She’s the GOAT. -MM A treat that’s getting me through the week are… this could not be more niche, but the plant-based red licorice that they have at WeWork. Literally, SO. GOOD. I don’t why I love them, but I do. -MM |
Meanwhile on our headphones….
…is our latest episode with Kat Calvin, the founder of Project ID Action Fund and the author of American Identity in Crisis: Notes From An Accidental Activist. Kat blew our minds for a second time during this interview, walking us through how 26 million Americans do not have IDs and how that it limits their access to just about everything, from jobs to housing to food. Insane. And as one can imagine, and can learn more about in the episode and in Kat’s book, this dynamic between IDs and being able to survive is not good. It needs to change, and there’s a bill that can do just that, the IDs For An Inclusive Democracy Act. If passed, it will give every American a free federal ID, opening up the doors to a whole new life. Before you tune into the episode, hit send on a note to your reps and give them a call too.
Now back to the show, which you can listen to via Apple Podcasts and Spotify Podcasts, and can watch here, on YouTube:
Introducing the Wall of Shame…
aka heinous bots comments that are so heinous so they’re….camp? This week’s winner is…
TikToks we’ve been sending each other include…
This one where we learn that Giuliani had married his cousin. Watching this pre-coffee was a fever dream.
This one – and this dress, really – that reminded us that we’ve never thought SO much about the Roman Empire before this last week
This one that nixed us both from contention of most likely to get away with stealing the declaration of independence because of our zodiac signs. C’est la vie.
