Hot Mic'd: A cheetos collab, KJP in Vogue, political rose & thorns

It’s September 7, do you know where your edition of Hot Mic’d is? Well you’re here, so we’re going to assume that’s a yes. Anyways, let’s get into:

Elected Official - Rose: I’m going to go with a group of reps instead of just one. The Michigan House Dems that introduced the Reproductive Health Act get the W from me. -SK

Elected Official - Thorn: Alabama AG Steve Marshall literally makes me skin crawl. This week, he told the court that he has the authority to “file criminal charges against people who assist those getting abortion care outside the state.” Like literally planning a drive out of state or leave in whatever capacity they choose. It’s not just enough to ban the procedure and life-saving healthcare in the state, but the guy is trying to trap people in the state. As Jessica Valenti always says, “cruelty is the point.” -SK

Show that’s got me hooked: I’m SO delayed on catching up on OBX it’s not even funny. Regardless, I binged szn 2 & 3 at a pace only olympic runners could envy. The glow up that JJ had, like I actually cannot. I’m in love, it’s fine. -SK

Celeb goss that’s wildin’ out: This isn’t even goss, it’s more like I went down an OBX rabbit hole after watching. Chase Stokes and Kelsea Ballerini are so cute together. I absolutely ship. -SK

The state rep I’d like to see run for at the federal level is… I always struggle with this Q because having powerful iconic people in state positions is so important – debatably more important. That said, I’d love, love, love to see WV Delegate Young run. The girls that get it, get it, and the girls that don’t, haven’t listened to our interview with her yet. -SK

A snack I can’t put down rn: This is such a throwback, but Gushers. I always love something chewy and I recently rediscovered the perfection of a Gusher. Literally, add to cart. I also have been getting string beans from the farmer’s market and chompin’ away. I know, what an odd pair. -SK

Social media moment that deserves a like: If someone were to ask me if Cheetos were Dem or GOP coded, I probably would’ve gone with GOP. What is my rationale for this? No clue, it’s just a gut feeling. However, a plot twist is afoot, literally because Cheetos just launched a Fashion Week collab with designer Coral Castillo and the resulting shoes and bag are giving Dem coded. Regardless, I’m obsessed. I also couldn’t have seen this coming in a million gazillion years, so cheers to keeping me on my toes? -SK

Elected Official - Rose: Not JB using his executive powers to protect the climate. ICYMI, the admin is reversing a Trump-era set of decisions on oil drilling Alaska across public lands and waters. The reversal cancels all existing gas leases in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. That’s 13 million acres. All of the yes and some thoughts from Elise Joshi. -MM

Elected Official - Thorn: Ted Cruz is always cringe, but his little beer stunt on new alcohol health guidelines really took it to a new level. Literally, the regs he’s pointing out don’t come from the Biden admin. And literally it’s a GUIDELINE – be like a normal person and don’t follow it? Or be like any other normal person lies to your doctor about how many drinks you consume a week? And also what a strange way to kinda promote alcohol as a coping mechanism for god knows what? This manchild – just no. -MM

Show that’s got me hooked: RN, I’m watching Hard Knocks because #sportz and getting ready for my girly pop fantasy football league. I will be winning said league FYI – all be warned. -MM

Celeb goss that’s wildin’ out: We talked about it when recording our intro this week, but I can’t remember if it made the cut or not – the Jonas x Sophie Turner break up. I’m not super invested in their relationship, but just wow another one bites the dust. Truly hot labor summer and also celeb power couple breakup summer. I really wonder who’s next… -MM

The state rep I’d like to see run for at the federal level is… Ummm so many. First that comes to mind, especially since our latest convo is super fresh, is Hawai’i State Rep. Kapela. If you want to get the vibe as to why, hear her chat about climate policy here. -MM

A snack I can’t put down rn: Find me scrolling UberEats for something yummy. PS if you’re feeling like a snack to your door, you cna get $5 off your first order when you spend at least $20 with code: affeats5ussep23 -MM

Social media moment that deserves a like: OKAY KJP. And yes, I’m pretending that me and Karine Jean-Pierre are besties – manifest that shit, right? Anyways, KJP’s vogue shoot is jusssssst everything. I mean look at these!! -MM

What’s new, what’s next episode-wise?

If you’re subscribed on Apple Podcasts you already know because a notification likely popped your way. But if you’re one, do it now so you can be one of the first to know when an episode drops. Deats aside, this week’s episode was with Hawai’i State Representative Jeanné Kapela. We got the lay of the land on what the state’s political landscape looks like – hint: kinda like NY or CA. We also get into climate change and its impact on the state, tourism and its impact as well, and what a Green New Deal would look like at the state level there. So much ground to cover, so pop in those pods or put it on the big screen and watch on YouTube.

Next week’s episode focuses on the FABRIC Act. Cue, an action item ahead of the release, here.
