Hot Mic'd: Black Friday sales, Arena Academy, action item, and Jack Harlow

This weekend’s agenda: watching Disney Channel original shows and eating ice cream.

An action item I wanted to put back on people’s radar is… one that would increase teacher pay. Last fall we had activist and teacher Nicholas Ferroni on the show to discuss the issues teachers are facing everyday – including unlivable wages. Not exactly the best formula for recruiting teachers, keeping teachers, and guarnatting the best education for our future. There’s a bill that could help steer the ship in the right direction – the American Teacher Act – that people can tell their reps to get on board with, here. - SK

A story I have my eye on is… this sheriff’s race in Louisiana where its outcome was determined by ONE vote. A recount is possible here so TBD, but most importantly, it furthers the fact that every vote matters. - SK

A newsletter I’m testing out is… the Pop Shop newsletter! It’s focused on beauty and fashion brands, especially those founded by influencers. I think it’s super interesting to see what’s going on in other niches and to see how there can be crossover between them all. - SK

A podcast episode I’m listening to is… the latest episode of Gut Feelings Podcast from Lo Bosworth featuring her interview with Paige DeSorbo. I always love hearing Paige’s POV on all the things and loved hers on this interview too. Fun fact, I once ran into Lo Bosworth at Ray’s downtown – it was like a day before the world shutdown for COVID and absolutely felt like a fever dream. - SK

An action item I wanted to put back on people’s radar is… one that would make paid leave for all a reality. This spring we sat down with Dawn Huckelbridge to discuss what paid leave for all is and why it’s needed – I won’t ruin the reveal, only point you to the episode ;) and of course the easy to do super quick action item to tell Congress to get their act together on passing paid leave for all, here. - MM

A story I have my eye on is… this story on the RHA in Michigan and how one Democrat stood in the way of removing the 24 hour waiting period. I could go in so many directions as to why this is frustrating, but it’s a move that just feels disingenuous. Hard ick. - MM

A newsletter I’m testing out is… Semafor’s Flagship newsletter. It covers international news and culture, which I’ve been trying to increase in my inbox. So, yea, I’m giving it a shot! Try it with me, here

- MM

A podcast episode I’m listening to is… You guys knooooow it’s Call Her Daddy’s interview with my husband, LOML (sorry, Biggie), Jack Harlow. Like let’s BFR, I’ve got this on repeat. I did learn that I may have to order myself a pair of scrubs…so that’s an interesting plot twist to this. - MM

THE NEXT GENERATION OF CAMPAIGN STAFF

Get trained, get on a campaign

Campaigns are like mini start-ups – they require a lot of minds to move and get off the ground effectively. Those minds fit a range of roles, from finance director to organizer to marketing manager, and beyond. But, how does one prepare to take on those roles? They look to Arena, which provides training for a wide array of campaign jobs. They also help to connect trainees with jobs across the industry via tools that we discuss at length with Lauren Baer, who is the managing partner at Arena. Having run for office herself, Lauren knows what’s needed to get staffers up to speed, and she shares with us those fundamental skills and how to acquire them, here:
